We caught up with former MGTS apprentice, Anthony Hyams, to discover how his career has progressed since completing his engineering apprenticeship.

Anthony left school in 2004 and promptly secured an engineering apprenticeship with Ardagh Group (formerly Ball Packaging). He tells us: “My dad was an engineer for years and my grandad was skilled too, so this influenced me into always having an interest in how things work and how things could be improved and developed from an engineering point of view.”

With a passion for learning, combined with encouragement and support from his MGTS Training & Development Adviser, Anthony completed his apprenticeship a year ahead of schedule, achieved a HNC in Electronics / Engineering and was nominated for the ‘EEF Apprentice of the Year’.

Since then Anthony has enjoyed a challenging and rewarding career with Ardagh. His various roles (Electrical Engineer, Support Engineer, Customer Technical Support Engineer) have enabled him to develop a wide range of skills and knowledge that include developing maintenance procedures to improve reliability and reduce costs; supporting local and international plants in projects and improvements, and providing technical support to a wide customer base, from craft brewers through to global beverage brands.

Anthony’s current role of Engineering Co-ordinator involves being responsible for preventative maintenance, improvement projects and repair and production support for can forming and wet systems at Ardagh’s Rugby facility.

Since completing his apprenticeship Anthony has always been interested in apprentice development and comments: “It is rewarding to now be in a position where I am able to support and mentor the next generation of engineers, having a positive influence on the quality of their apprenticeship and individual development.”

Finally, Anthony shares: “I am a firm believer in education and strive to keep learning throughout my working and personal life. Sponsored by my employer I achieved a BSc in Technology, Design and Innovation 2:1 whilst studying in my own time and would like to one day move on to my Masters.”

We congratulate Anthony on his significant achievements to date!
