We asked Jaimiee-Leigh, a Multi-skilled Maintenance Engineer and former apprentice with MGTS, to share some thoughts about her career in engineering. Here’s what she had to say…
“I completed an Advanced level apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacture (Engineering Maintenance) in December 2017. My apprenticeship journey with Princes LTD was positively eye opening. It involved travelling to different locations like Germany, Bradford and Coventry for training purposes. They encourage you to complete your work to the best of your abilities and specifically Cardiff has a great support system and help with your progression within the industry.
“I chose engineering as a career because I enjoyed my science practical lessons which included making basic circuits. This sparked my interest in electrical engineering. I was lucky to be encouraged by my tutors in college to do research into apprenticeships.
“My most favourite memories of being an engineering apprentice would be completing my apprenticeship early and receiving an MGTS Special Recognition Award which then led me to getting a full-time contract with Princes LTD as a Shift Maintenance Engineer.
“The highlight of my career so far would be completing my HND with a Distinction and currently completing my Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
“What I would say to anyone considering an engineering apprenticeship is that it’s the best way forward with the support of a great company. Being paid while you learn is the best form of motivation. Training on the job helps with your confidence because you experience real-life breakdowns and get to see fault finding in action. You tend to learn new skills quicker as every day is a learning day!”
Congratulations on your achievements Jaimiee-Leigh…you are a true inspiration to anyone considering an engineering apprenticeship!
