MGTS Annual Apprentice Awards September 2009 - First Year Apprentice of the Year

First Year Apprentice of the Year

Jake Watson

Age: 17
From: Nuneaton
Company: Hi-Tech AeroSpace Components Ltd, Exhall

Jake Watson was ‘delighted’ last night, after winning the First Year Apprentice of the Year award at the annual MGTS ceremony held at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena.

"I feel really happy to have won. I have worked very hard and enjoyed my training,” he said.

Training with MGTS came highly recommended for Jake, and now he can see why.

Jake, aged 17, who attended Alderman Smith School in Nuneaton has spent the past year training full-time at MGTS and will now now continue his studies one day per week at Gulson Road while working at Hi-Tech Aerospace Components Ltd on Bayton Road Industrial Estate, Exhall.

He said: “My brother and cousins went to MGTS so I already knew what it was like.

“The training was good and it was really well structured. It was just interesting and I enjoyed getting into the training and learning about everything.

“I like the high level of training.”

Jake, of Nuneaton, enjoyed working with other apprentices, and the way the instructors taught them.

He said: “I can’t put my finger on what I like about engineering, it’s just practical.

“I’m not sure exactly what I want to do in the future, I just want to go on to better things.”

Steve Palmer, Technical Centre Manager for MGTS in Gulson Road, Stoke, Coventry, said: “He started off on our sponsored programme and worked exceptionally well. He’s applied himself to the best of his ability and produced excellent work consistently throughout the year, and demonstrated a high level of commitment towards his training programme. He has a positive attitude which put him in good stead, and the employer obviously saw that in him and offered him the position.”

Jake was one of 14 adults and young people singled out for awards for excellence at MGTS annual awards event (September 21, 2009).

The ceremony was attended by more than 200 guests from Coventry, Warwickshire and the surrounding areas, including apprentices, graduates, employers, schools, and representatives from Dudley College and the Learning and Skills Council Coventry and Warwickshire.

Daniel Gidney, Chief Executive of the Ricoh arena and an awards presenter at the ceremony, said: "We are delighted to be able to host   this ceremony for the second year running. I am also delighted to be associated with MGTS which breathes success, inspiration and development. We are now coming out of recession in the city and everyone in this room is part of that regeneration. You are all a fabulous credit to Coventry."
