Company: Freeman and Proctor, Caldwell Road, Nuneaton
Young engineer Adam Turner won the Charles Hewson Award for Most Improved Apprentice of the Year at this year’s annual MGTS Awards ceremony in Coventry.
"It felt really good to win the award - I am totally shocked. I do feel proud because I have worked hard,” said Adam, at the event held at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena.
Engineering may be in his blood, but Adam is proving he has what it takes to succeed in his chosen career.
He came top of the class in some of the tests he took after the first year of his four-year Advanced Apprenticeship.
Adam, aged 17, has always been interested in engineering. He said: “I was influenced because of my dad, he’s been an engineer all his life and I took an interest in it. I did work experience at his place and generally had an interest and it’s evolved.”
After taking his GCSEs at Manor Park School in Nuneaton, Adam went along for an interview at Freeman and Proctor on the Centrovell Estate, Caldwell Road, Nuneaton, and was subsequently employed by them.
They sent him to MGTS for training and he has just completed the first year of his apprenticeship.
Adam, of Rothesay Close, Nuneaton, said: “It was good. I learned loads of different kinds of engineering, I didn’t think it would be so full on as it was. It’s a really good preparation for what things are like out there.
“We had a test at the end to see how we had come on and in milling and turning luckily enough I came top of the class, and got two distinctions out of it. My dad was pleased!”
Adam is now working back at Freeman and Proctor and is continuing to attend MGTS for training on a day release basis.
Steve Palmer, Technical Centre Manager for MGTS in Gulson Road, Stoke, Coventry, said: “He was here early every day and was really striving to achieve his potential, which he has obviously done. He is a quiet young man and lacked confidence but as the year’s gone on he’s proved his ability and shown the centre staff he’s got what it takes to succeed. He’s blossomed and will be a credit to his company.”
Adam was one of 14 adults and young people singled out for awards for excellence at MGTS’ annual awards event, (September 21, 2009).
The ceremony was attended by more than 200 guests from Coventry, Warwickshire and the surrounding areas, including apprentices, graduates, employers, schools, and representatives from Dudley College and the Learning and Skills Council Coventry and Warwickshire.
Daniel Gidney, Chief Executive of the Ricoh arena and an awards presenter at the ceremony, said: "We are delighted to be able to host this ceremony for the second year running. I am also delighted to be associated with MGTS which breathes success, inspiration and development. We are now coming out of recession in the city and everyone in this room is part of that regeneration. You are all a fabulous credit to Coventry."
