School Leavers Secure Apprenticeships with MGTS

SCHOOL LEAVERS SECURE APPRENTICESHIPS WITH MGTS

Ambitious young people who have left or are soon to leave school may be finding it difficult to get the jobs of their choice as recession bites hard in Coventry and Warwickshire and the jobless figures rise. However, specialist engineering training provider MGTS has found apprenticeships for more than 28 unemployed young people in top city engineering firms in the past year.

Geoff Rushton, Field Operations Manager for the past 8 years at the educational charity in Gulson Road said “The unemployed programme’s success comes from forging longstanding relationships with local employers. Then we make sure we choose the hardworking and creative candidates we know fit with their individual company culture.”

The year long sponsored apprenticeship programme, which has been running for 5 years, has seen more than 100 people find jobs to date. While completing this first year of an engineering apprenticeship MGTS helps the youngsters gain the qualifications and confidence necessary to find work.

“We are looking for those who are enthusiastic, capable and dedicated to making their mark in engineering so we can maintain our reputation for providing top apprentices.” Mr Rushton added.

Nuneaton teenager Paul Cope is one of the sponsored apprentices who has been placed in the Facilities Section of the Engine Management Systems Engineering Department at DENSO Sales UK Ltd, Walsgrave Triangle, Coventry; a global supplier of automotive technology, systems and components.

Paul left school at 18 with two A Levels in physics and geography and one AS Level in maths but felt disappointed with his results. The 19 year old from Croft Road, Stockingford, gained a place on MGTS’ sponsored programme but wasn’t sure it was the right decision until he began his apprenticeship. He said “I thought that I should really go to uni and get a degree, but since I have been at MGTS I have realised the benefits of earning while you learn. The training has been first class – they teach you every aspect of engineering including electrical, mechanical and maintenance skills. Now I am lucky enough to have begun a career at a massive corporation which offers me the chance to grow, learn and climb the career ladder. This has been a great opportunity for me at a time of huge recession. For anyone who has serious aspirations to become an engineer I would definitely recommend this route.”
