ENGINEERING APPRENTICESHIPS - 35% INCREASE
Lee Weatherly, MGTS CEO, explained that the increase in apprenticeship opportunities is a real good news story. He stated that MGTS apprentice vacancies are 35% up on last year with a total of 150 apprenticeship opportunities notified to MGTS. Lee acknowledged that apprenticeships have enjoyed high levels of Government support. He is particularly pleased to note that the stabilised industrial environment has been matched by greater employer confidence.
Having recently opened an engineering centre in Redditch, local interest in engineering apprenticeships has increased by 300% compared to 2010.
Lee also recognises that a further contribution to apprenticeship growth is MGTS increase in national operation. Working with blue chip process industries MGTS is supporting employers to take on maintenance engineering apprentices in Norwich, London, Sheffield and Huddersfield. Looking ahead, 2012 shows promising signs with 35 maintenance apprenticeship vacancies recorded for additional national companies. Working nationally with big name companies has also enabled MGTS to increase a local applicant pool of 220 to an impressive 980 covering all national markets.
Lee concluded by saying that once all the engineering vacancies have been filled he would be taking steps to recruit more technical staff to support apprentices locally, regionally and nationally.
