The First Year Maintenance Apprentice of the Year award last night went to Paul Wormington, at the annual MGTS ceremony held in Coventry.
At the event at the Ricoh Arena, he said, "I was very surprised and happy to win. The training has been really good - I have worked really hard all year so
I am really pleased with the award."
I am really pleased with the award."
Paul is managing to put what he’s learnt in the first year of his Advanced Apprenticeship at MGTS into practice both at work and in his spare time.
He left Campion School in the summer of 2008 and started the apprenticeship in the September, and after a year at MGTS full time he is now going back one day a week, while working for King Automotive Systems Ltd in Daimler Green, Coventry.
Paul, aged 17, from Home Farm Crescent, Whitnash, Leamington, thought he would enjoy engineering because his dad works as a maintenance electrician at Prodrive Motorsport, and he liked what he’d heard about the work. He said: “I just wanted to get a trade and I enjoy doing electrical work.
“It was good at MGTS. You all got to work together, it wasn’t just doing things on your own, you all helped each other out. The instructors were nice and I got on well with them.”
Paul said he particularly enjoyed welding, and he passed all his end-of-year tests.
At King Automotive he’s been helping with fitting the main power to the machines, and is looking forward to increasing his skills this year.
What Paul has learned already has already paid off for one of his friends.
He said: “My friend’s got his own rally car and I went to a rally in Wales to help him out. It was my first time and I am going to go again in October to help maintain the car. Some of the things like relays that I learnt about I have been using to help him.”
Steve Palmer, Technical Centre Manager for MGTS in Gulson Road, Stoke, Coventry, said: “He picked up the concept of electrical wiring and testing and power very quickly. He has been able to work on his own initiative to meet the standard required and has done that very successfully. He produced a good standard of work throughout the year.”
Paul was one of 14 adults and young people singled out for awards for excellence at MGTS’ annual awards event (September 21, 2009).
The ceremony was attended by more than 200 guests from Coventry, Warwickshire and the surrounding areas, including apprentices, graduates, employers, schools, and representatives from Dudley College and the Learning and Skills Council Coventry and Warwickshire.
