The primary responsibility will be the supervised training in practical and academic duties for the repair and management of medical equipment from both UHB NHS Foundation Trust and external Service Level Agreement (SLA) sites.

The participation in scheduled maintenance and electrical safety testing will be required and may occasionally require work outside normal hours.

The post-holder will need to gain knowledge of all Departmental procedures, safety regulations and any legislation that is relevant to the job.

The post-holder will be required to use their own vehicle to carry out maintenance on external Trust sites.

All tasks will be carried out under strict supervision.

MAIN DUTIES  & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. To assist under strict supervision the basis repair and servicing of medical equipment used throughout the UHB NHS Trust and SLA sites. This work requires specialist knowledge of any of the following Analogue, Digital Electronics, Microprocessor, pneumatics and mechanical techniques. It involves fault-finding, diagnosing and repairs of complex and delicate medical equipment to component level.
  2. Strict supervision in functional and safety testing of new and repaired medical equipment prior to use within UHB NHS Foundation Trust and external SLA sites covered by the department.
  3. Strict supervision for involvement in scheduled maintenance and calibration schemes to ensure the electrical safety and correct operation of medical equipment.
  4. To gain an understanding of vital signs and physiological measurements in clinical areas.
  5. Participating in goods inwards/outwards procedures of the department, particularly for medical equipment and spare parts.
  6. To assist with the collection and return of equipment within and outside the hospital and occasional transport of heavy goods during new installations or department migrations. Manual handling of heavy equipment in confined patient areas.
  7. Using departmental/Trust computer system for record keeping, equipment testing/upgrades and communication. Responsibility for keeping accurate and up to date job details on the Equipment Management System. Carrying out light office duties such as answering calls, sending parcels, booking in equipment, some filing.
  8. Ordering of components and spares through SAGE and keeping stocks in order and up to date.
  9. To keep written records of all work carried out, including keeping a day to day log book on work carried out in the department.
  10. To work in a safe manner and consider his/her own, colleagues and others health and safety in the workplace. To adhere to and safely use decontamination, waste disposal, infection control and other Trust policies when handling medical equipment.
  11. Gain the knowledge of and support the use and implementation of departmental procedures, Trust policies and other legislation related to medical equipment or work practices.
  12. To adhere to the Departments Quality Management System. Be prepared to undertake training in internal auditing as per BSI ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System.
  13. To gain professional electronics knowledge and specialist knowledge and experience across wide range of medical equipment and also wide range of models within each group.
  14. To attend college on a day to day basis to ultimately obtain a BTEC National in Electrical/Electronics Engineering.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

Moderate Physical effort is required frequently such as:

  • Moving of anaesthetic machine’s which weigh over 150 kilogram’s.
  • Working in awkward positions for example, under bed’s and in confined spaces. 
  • Lifting/removing of heavy equipment that can weigh over 15 kilogram’s, in some cases from a height of over 6-foot.

MENTAL EFFORT

On a daily basis high concentration, accuracy and quick decision making is required, and decisions made can have an impact on patient care. The pattern of all these can be unpredictable.

EMOTIONAL EFFORT

The job entails dealing regularly with faults on equipment, which can be connected to distressed patients.

NORMAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent exposure to unpleasant conditions such as:

  • Dust
  • Fumes
  • Body fluids externally/internally in equipment
  • Compressed gases
  • Unavoidable exposure to electrical hazards

Frequent requirement to use road transportation.

  • Technician Occupations
    PRODUCTION ENGINEERING
    However good an initial design is, or a production process is, there are many reasons why it may be necessary to make changes during the life of a product. The reasons may be market-led or technology-led. Production Engineers need to: Identify opportunities to improve products and processes / Calculate and demonstrate benefits of improvements / Review quality performance of current production process / Act as a link between customer and production department.

    DESIGN
    Design and Development Engineers are involved with the enhancement of existing products and projects to create new products that meet customer requirements by: Interpretation of customer specification / Establishing objectives and methods for Design and Development projects / Analysing and assessing the effects of design briefs / Producing detailed drawings.

    QUALITY
    This involves electrical, electronic and mechanical maintenance, repair and installation of production and process machinery and equipment to include: Increased ability to supply defect free products / Systematic corrective action and lasting improvement / Encouragement of planned problem prevention.

    MAINTENANCE
    This involves electrical, electronic and mechanical maintenance, repair and installation of production and process machinery and equipment to include: Systematic and logical fault finding techniques / Repair and replacement of components / Functional testing and monitoring against specification / Modification and ongoing improvements to engineered systems / Programming and setting sophisticated electronic equipment / Installation of new plant and equipment.

  • Craft Occupations
    TOOLMAKING
    Production of engineering components to a consistently high standard, requires sophisticated tooling and equipment to be manufactured that will locate and support components during the manufacturing process. Toolmakers need to be able to: Use a range of machine tools and hand tools to manufacture products using their own initiative and often to their own design / Set and operate a range of machine and hand tools / Produce working diagrams to British and International Standards / Work to tight timescales and deadlines often unsupervised / Interpret internal and external customer requirements.

    CNC MACHINING
    The production of engineering components to consistent high quality standards is carried out on sophisticated computer controlled machines that can produce one off, batch or by a continuous process. This covers all types of CNC machines that cut, punch, bend or form. The CNC Engineer is responsible for: Producing programmes to meet customer specification / Controlling and modifying existing programmes to maintain quality standards / Setting and operating the computer numerical control machining process.

    WELDING
    This still remains an important joining tehnique which is utilised in all aspects of engineering from research and development to high volume production of automotive parts. Processes include: Resistance welding, TIG welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, Manual Metal Arc Welding. The Welder is responsible for: Setting and operating a wide range of welding equipment / Producing a variety of welded joints in a range of material specifications and thicknesses / Carrying out visual and destructive weld inspection techniques to assess weld quality to national standards.

    SHEET METAL
    All of today's motor cars have been developed and handcrafted as one-off prototypes by highly skilled sheet metal workers, using a range of hand and power tools. Prestige examples include Aston Martin, MGF, Rolls Royce and Bentley. Skills invovled include: Blank plate development of components / Wheeling panels to achieve double curvature / Producing a range of self-secured joints to assemble components / Metal finishing completed sheet metal components.
Engineering Production
  • Structure of this Advanced Apprenticeship
    YEAR 1
    - 16 - 24 weeks training in MGTS Technical Academy or other approved centres
    - Level 2 EAL Units x 10 to be achieved
    - Functional Skills - Level 2
    - Further Education - EAL Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and / or Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering

    YEAR 2
    - Development and training in: Assembly / Machine Cells / Maintenance and other areas connected with first appointment - Possibly complete skill specific Level 2 in Mechanical Manufacture

    THE OUTCOME

    Successful completion of an Apprenticeship may offer the opportunity for progression onto the Advanced Apprenticeship programme.
  • Engineering Occupations
    MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
    Maintenance Fitters repair and maintain machines of all kinds. Mechanical Fitters help to build machinery and make things. They produce and fit parts of machinery and equipment together. They use drawings to find out the size of components and the way they fit together.

    FABRICATION
    Welders use intense heat to join metals together permanently. Sheetmetal workers can change flat sheets of metal into different shapes.

    MACHINING
    Machinists use various tools to shape metals with a high level of accuracy. Turners use lathes that spin pieces of metal at high speeds. Cutting tools are held against the material to shave metal from the surface and produce the required shape. Milling is a process that cuts metal from an object held by clamps or a vice on a working table, using a revolving cutter. A grinding machine is used to finish work to exactly the right size.

 

What is an Engineering Apprenticeship?

There are three types of apprenticeships in engineering: Apprentices, Advanced Apprentices and Higher Apprentices:

  • Apprenticeships for Apprentices usually last at least a year and result in Level 2 qualifications.
  • Advanced Apprenticeships usually last 3 - 4 years and apprentices work towards a Level 3 Diploma, Functional Skills Level 2 and a Technical Certificate at Level 3.
  • Higher Apprenticeships include a Foundation Degree or HND and Level 4 qualifications.
What entry qualifications will I need?

We are keen to recruit young people who have or are predicted to gain at least 5 GCSE's (or equivalent) including English Language, Maths and Science at Grade C or above. Please also contact us if you have completed AS, A Levels or BTEC National in Engineering and are looking for a challenging and rewarding career.

Do I get paid?

You will be paid by your employer typically between £150 - £250 per week. This will increase annually as your gain more skills and so become more useful to your employer.

When will my apprenticeship start?

Apprenticeships start in September each year with recruitment commencing in December the year before, so the earlier you apply the better. Your first year of training (September to July) will be spent at an MGTS Technical Centre (Monday to Thursday 08:00 - 16:00, Friday 08:00 - 13:00).

How long will an apprenticeship take?

Apprenticeships are normally 3-4 years duration for an Advanced level and 18 months for an Intermediate level.
